To develop new systems level tools and approaches to understand dynamic biological networks and complexity, and to use the measurement needs of biology to drive the development of new technologies and computational tools.
In the second year of our NIGMS award, we continue to gain significant insights into each experimental system by developing condition specific global data sets at multiple levels of the molecular hierarchy (DNA, RNA, protein, molecular networks) and by generating models of gene regulatory and signaling networks. The Genomics Core has released genome-tiling as mature technology that is in use across the Center and, additionally, has developed a customized software application to incorporate the capabilities of leveraged equipment into the Core. The Proteomics Core is working on high throughput technology for assessing entire proteomes and has leveraged additional instruments to significantly increase the Core s capabilities. The Microfluidics and Imaging Core is in the final stages of releasing platforms as mature technology and has also leveraged equipment to create a Core facility with significantly increased capabilities. The Informatics Core has been instrumental in the integration and standardization of data across research groups - production, access, annotation and analysis as well as working with the community in the redesign of the publically available tools.
Biological inquiry will continue to drive the Center s objectives for the 3rd year of the grant. Research projects remain unified in their needs to pursue information at the level of single cells, to develop integrated analysis tools to expand understanding of dynamic macromolecular networks. These shared biological drivers are reflected in the objectives of each Core for 2008, which include providing education and training on mature technologies and platforms, a goal of creating a library of validated peptide fragments for the yeast proteome, and the continued development and public availability of software tools to the community. Our educational programs and professional development opportunities will move from the pilot phase and expand in the number of participants and scope of program, based on continued and ongoing program assessment(s).
