With a success rate of 18% for Research Project Grants (NIGMS Feedback Loop Blog, “Budget Outlook for Fiscal Year 2013 and Beyond”), junior investigators require training to become and remain competitive for funding as they develop in their careers.  Center faculty and scientists provide interactive discussions for ISB scientists on how to develop a research statement.  Topics include: common problems with grant applications from new investigators, how to show that the research contributes to the field—its relevance, distinctiveness and importance, research goals for a three to five year period and potential outcomes, how to convey excitement about the research, and how to identify areas for professional development and training.
